Our Hike

Starting from the trailhead, we took a counter-clockwise approach and headed up the hill for a more challenging hike. The wide and well maintained trail with rest areas, handrails, and interpretive signage gives this trail the feeling of being on a nature trail in a park versus a hike in the forest. After a couple of hundred yards the trail began to switchback and turned from soft dirt to blacktop.

Once reaching the vista point the having returned to dirt and weaves around the vista area. There is a spur trail heading to the true summit of the butte, but it was closed for the falcon breeding season Feb-July 15. With an elevation of 6200’ at the saddle the view from the trail was splendid, Prescott, Granite Mountain, Mingus Mountain, and were all visible.

We headed down the dirt path to complete the loop and search for Geocaches. The dirt path was an easy stroll and a stroller could easily be used on this trail. The trail would be excellent for trail runners, as the elevation gain would allow for a good quick workout. This Thumb Butte is more park than forest. The area is clean and well-kept and there are plenty of picnic tables and Ramada's available at the parking lot.
